Sinn Féin’s Michelle Gildernew Announces Candidacy for European Elections

Sinn Féin’s Michelle Gildernew, former Agriculture minister in Stormont and MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, is set to seek a nomination to stand in the European elections. The seasoned politician plans to represent the party in the Midlands North West constituency in Ireland.

Commitment to Irish Interests in the EU

Expressing the importance of Ireland’s role in shaping the future of the European Union, Gildernew stated, “Ireland needs to be at the fore in setting the direction of the European Union in the years ahead.” She emphasized her experience in negotiation and dealing with EU institutions as a former Agriculture Minister and her desire to advocate for Irish interests in the European Parliament.

EU’s Role in Brexit and Vision for the North

Highlighting the EU’s pivotal role in preventing a hard border during Brexit, Gildernew asserted her belief that Northern Ireland’s future should be within the European Union, aligned with a United Ireland. She emphasized the need for stronger representation in the European Parliament, asserting, “Ireland needs stronger representatives.”

Sinn Féin’s Vigilant Stance in the EU

Gildernew outlined Sinn Féin’s commitment to holding the EU accountable, stating, “A strong Sinn Féin team will call out the EU when needed if it is not acting in the best interest of the Irish people.” She pointed to instances of overstepping, citing the EU Commission President’s actions in recent months.

Priorities as MEP

If elected, Gildernew outlined her priorities, focusing on supporting states dealing with challenges like the cost-of-living, regional development, climate change, and safeguarding the needs of Irish farmers in the upcoming Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) negotiations.

Gildernew expressed optimism about Ireland’s potential, stating, “This is a time of huge potential and opportunity for Ireland.” She pledged to contribute to positive change for communities, workers, and families if elected as MEP for the Midlands North West.
